Somali Military court sentences masterminds of Daallo Airline bomb attack, including airport security chief
Somalia’s military court in Mogadishu on Monday, May 30 pronounced sentence on Daallo Airline suicide attack suspects. Abdiwali Mohmoud Mo’ow who was the security chief of aviation agency at Adan Aden International Airport was given life in jail sentence.
Arays Hashi Abdi a businessman who is said to be the main mastermind of the attack received the sentences in absentia.
Abshir Mohmmed Malin and Safiyo Abdullahi Hassan- the security scan operators sentenced to four years in military jail.
Liban Mohammad Yalahow, Omar Muhaydadin Hassuin, Mohammad and Abdi Ilmi have been slapped with a sentence of one year in military jail.
Bashir Abdullahi Afrah, Ali Nor Salad And Adan Dahir Salad Shiekhow sentenced to 6 months in military Jail. Five others were acquitted after they were found not guilty.
On February 2, laptop bomber identified as Abdullahi Abdisalam Borleh, an elderly Somali national attacked Daallo Airlines Flight 3159.
The suspected suicide bomber detonated on board the Somalia-owned Daallo Airlines plane in mid-air, as it took off from Aden Adde International airport in Mogadishu.
The explosion failed to down the commercial jet, but it left a gaping hole in the fuselage. The force of the blast sucked the alleged bomber out of the plane’s cabin. His body fell to the ground near the district of Bal’ad, about 20 miles from the capital, where it was recovered by authorities.
The pilot of the Airbus A321 was forced to make an emergency landing just minutes after takeoff. The security footage released days later showed two men – one wearing a bright orange airport security vest (said to be Abdiweli, who is now sentenced to life in jail)– handing over what looks like a laptop case to a passenger waiting to board. Investigators said the laptop-like bag contained the bomb that was detonated on board the Djibouti-bound flight.
Al-Shabab has claimed responsibility for a purported bomb attack on a passenger plane, saying it was targeted at Western officials and Turkish NATO forces.
Al Shabab said the operation was "retribution for the crimes committed by the coalition of Western crusaders and their intelligence agencies against the Muslims of Somalia"

Killing of gorilla to save 4-year-od boy at Ohio zoo sparks outrage, over 2,000 people sign a petition
The killing of a gorilla at the Cincinnati Zoo on Saturday after a 4-year-old boy tumbled into the ape's enclosure triggered outrage and questions about safety, but zoo officials called the decision to use lethal force a tough but necessary choice, Reuters report.
Over 2,000 people signed a petition on Change.org that sharply criticized the Cincinnati Police Department and the zoo for putting down the animal and called for the child's parents to be "held accountable for their actions of not supervising their child."
Cincinnati police on Sunday said the parents had not been charged, but that charges could eventually be sought by the Hamilton County Prosecuting Attorney. A spokeswoman for the prosecutor did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
Authorities did not identify the child or his parents. The family could not be reached on Sunday. A Facebook page titled "Justice for Harambe" had more than 3,000 likes by Sunday afternoon, a day after the 400-pound (181-kg) gorilla was shot dead about 10 minutes after encountering and dragging the child.
The animal, named Harambe, was a Western lowland gorilla, an endangered species, and the zoo said it had intended to use him for breeding.
"If we think it's acceptable to kill a gorilla who has done nothing wrong, I don't think our city should have gorillas," Manvinder Singh posted on the Facebook page.
A blog post on the website for People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals questioned why it was necessary to kill the gorilla and whether zoos could meet the needs of such animals.
"A 17-year-old gorilla named Harambe is dead, and a child is in the hospital. Why?" blogger Jennifer O'Connor wrote. "Western lowland gorillas are gentle animals. They don't attack unless they're provoked."
Witnesses told local television that the boy repeatedly expressed a desire to join the gorilla in the zoo habitat. Moments later, the boy crawled through a barrier and fell about 12 feet (3.7-meters) into a moat surrounding the habitat, where Harambe grabbed him, zoo officials said.
It was the first time in the 38-year history of the Cincinnati Zoo & Botanical Garden's gorilla exhibit that an unauthorized person was able to get into the enclosure, zoo president Thane Maynard said on Saturday.
"They made a tough choice and they made the right choice because they saved that little boy's life," he said, adding that a member of the zoo's Dangerous Animal Response Team fired the shot that killed the ape.
Maynard said the team decided to use deadly force instead of tranquilizers to subdue the gorilla because it could have taken some time for the drug to take effect when an animal was in agitated state.
The child was taken to Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center for treatment of non-life threatening injuries. Hospital officials, citing privacy laws, declined to say on Sunday whether the child had been released or to disclose any details about his injuries.
The Cincinnati zoo was open on Sunday, although Gorilla World was expected to be closed indefinitely. Neither the zoo nor the fire department responded to a request for comment.

Woman convinced teenage schoolgirls to sell their virginity for money (photos)
A Cambodian court has ordered the temporary imprisonment of a Mamasan who convinced schoolgirls to sell their virginity. According to Kampuchea Thmey Daily News, the judge of municipal court temporary imprisoned a 32-year-old woman who was accused of convincing young schoolgirls to sell their virginity. The trade normally took place at the hotel.
Anti-human Trafficking and Juvenile Protection said that in the evening on May 26, police cracked down on virginity trading related crimes when a woman was found brining some young schoolgirls to the hotel for their virginity trade business located in Chea Sim Blvd, Phnom Penh Thmey commune, Sen Sok district, Phnom Penh.
Police arrested Eng Bopha and saved four young schoolgirls whose age ranged from 17 to 23 years old. Police also confiscated $1,000 USD.
"The saved victims told police that they were brought to Cambodians who live abroad for the price ranging from $1,500 to $2,500. However, after they had slept with the customers, they only received $200. The suspect confessed to committing the crime of human trafficking." the police said
After questioning, the victims were sent to Social Ministry in Phnom Penh while the suspect was sent to court and later temporary imprisoned.

Humanitarian organization release heartbreaking photo of a migrant baby who drowned off Libyan coast
A photograph of a drowned migrant baby in the arms of a German rescuer was distributed on Monday, May 30 by a humanitarian organization aiming to persuade European authorities to ensure safe passage to migrants, after hundreds are feared to have drowned in the Mediterranean last week.
The baby, who appears to be no more than a year old, was pulled from the sea on Friday after the capsizing of a wooden boat. Forty-five bodies arrived in the southern Italian port of Reggio Calabria on Sunday aboard an Italian navy ship, which picked up 135 survivors from the same incident.
German humanitarian organization Sea-Watch, operating a rescue boat in the sea between Libya and Italy, distributed the picture taken by a media production company on board and which showed a rescuer cradling the child like a sleeping baby.
In an email, the rescuer, who gave his name as Martin but did not want his family name published, said he had spotted the baby in the water "like a doll, arms outstretched".
"I took hold of the forearm of the baby and pulled the light body protectively into my arms at once, as if it were still alive ... It held out its arms with tiny fingers into the air, the sun shone into its bright, friendly but motionless eyes."
The rescuer, a father of three and by profession a music therapist, added: "I began to sing to comfort myself and to give some kind of expression to this incomprehensible, heart-rending moment. Just six hours ago this child was alive."
Like the photograph of the three-year-old Syrian boy Aylan lying lifeless on a Turkish beach last year, the image puts a human face on the more than 8,000 people who have died in the Mediterranean since the start of 2014.
Little is known about the child, who according to Sea-Watch was immediately handed over to the Italian navy. Rescuers could not confirm whether the partially clothed infant was a boy or a girl and it is not known whether the child's mother or father are among the survivors.
Sea-Watch collected about 25 other bodies, including another child, according to testimony from the crew seen by Reuters. The Sea-Watch team said it unanimously decided to publish the photo.
"In the wake of the disastrous events it becomes obvious to the organizations on the ground that the calls by EU politicians to avoid further death at sea sum up to nothing more than lip service," Sea-Watch said in a statement in English distributed along with the photograph.
"If we do not want to see such pictures we have to stop producing them," Sea-Watch said, calling for Europe to allow migrants safe and legal passage as a way of shutting down people smuggling and further tragedies.
At least 700 migrants may have died at sea this past week in the busiest week of migrant crossings from Libya towards Italy this year, the UN Refugee agency said on Sunday.
The boat carrying the baby left the shores of Libya near Sabratha late on Thursday, and then began to take on water, according to accounts by survivors collected by Save the Children on Sunday. Hundreds were on board when it capsized, the survivors said.

Journalist and mafia expert says Britain is the world's most corrupt nation
A journalist who has spent over a decade documenting the criminal dealings of the mafia has named Britain the most corrupt country in the world. 36-year-old Roberto Saviano who wrote the best-selling exposés Gomorrah and ZeroZeroZero, made the comments at the Hay Literary Festival.
He has been living under police protection since publishing revelations about members of the Camorra, a powerful Neapolitan branch of the mafia, in 2006.
He said: “If I asked you what is the most corrupt place on Earth you might tell me well it’s Afghanistan, maybe Greece, Nigeria, the South of Italy and I will tell you it’s the UK.
“It’s not the bureaucracy, it’s not the police, it’s not the politics but what is corrupt is the financial capital. 90 per cent of the owners of capital in London have their headquarters offshore.
“Jersey and the Cayman’s are the access gates to criminal capital in Europe and the UK is the country that allows it. That is why it is important why it is so crucial for me to be here today and to talk to you because I want to tell you , this is about you, this is about your life, this is about your government.”
Mr Saviano also weighed in on the EU referendum debate, Britain will go to the polls next month to decide whether to leave the EU or remain and he makes a case for remaining.
He said: “Leaving the EU means allowing this to take place. It means allowing the Qatari societies, the Mexican cartels, the Russian Mafia to gain even more power and HSBC has paid £2 billion Euros in fines to the US government, because it confessed that it had laundered money coming from the cartels and the Iranian companies. We have proof, we have evidence.”

Athletic Director apologizes for buying condoms for Ludacris

In the apology to the UGA board of Directors leaked by Athens Online Greg McGarity explained,
“I do want to take this opportunity to apologize to our board for mistakes we made with certain aspects of the details of an entertainment agreement. Few things in my professional life have bothered me more than this situation. There are no reruns in life so we need to turn the page, learn from our mistakes and do everything we can to make sure errors of this nature do not reoccur."
"Certainly appreciated that the athletic department took responsibility for some of the terms in that contract. Obviously in retrospect they should have done a more thorough job of reviewing all of the riders and removing those that were objectionable. I appreciate that he’s accepted that that’s what athletics should have done and what it will do moving forward.”
Germany’s Hummels faces Euro 2016 race against time
Germany’s Mats Hummels admits he is facing a race against time to be fit for the World Cup winners’ first game of Euro 2016 in little over a fortnight.
Germany open their European campaign against Ukraine in Lille on June 12, but centre-back Hummels is struggling with a torn calf muscle he suffered in the German Cup final on May 21 and has not trained since.
Hummels missed Sunday’s 3-1 friendly defeat to Slovakia in Augsburg, remaining at the team’s pre-Euro 2016 camp in Ascona, Switzerland, for extra treatment.
Joachim Loew must trim four names from his 27-man squad before midnight on Tuesday and Germany’s coach says he will not take a player to Euro 2016 who is unfit.
But Hummels admits he probably will not be ready to face Ukraine, or even for their second Group C match four days later against Poland.
“It’s going to take a while until I can kick a ball again,” Hummels, who will join Bayern Munich from Borussia Dortmund next season, told broadcaster ZDF.
“First of all, I need to be 100 percent fit. We’ll have to see which game I can aim for.
“Perhaps it won’t be ready, or maybe even for the second.
“You probably won’t see me train with the team in Ascona at all.”
Germany have one more Euro 2016 warm-up game against Hungary on Saturday in Gelsenkirchen.
Dortmund winger Marco Reus is struggling with a groin injury while Germany captain Bastian Schweinsteiger is recovering after tearing his medial knee ligament in March.
Family planning not for Muslims, says Turkey’s Erdogan
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said on Monday that family planning and contraception were not for Muslim families, in his latest comments promoting population growth that have angered women’s activists.
Erdogan said it was the responsibility of mothers to ensure the continued growth of Turkey’s population, which has expanded at a rate of around 1.3 percent in the last few years.
“I will say it clearly… We need to increase the number of our descendants,” he said in a speech in Istanbul.
“People talk about birth control, about family planning. No Muslim family can understand and accept that!
“As God and as the great prophet said, we will go this way. And in this respect the first duty belongs to mothers.”
Erdogan and his wife Emine have two sons and two daughters. Earlier this month, the president attended the high-profile marriage of his younger daughter Sumeyye to defence industrialist Selcuk Bayraktar.
His elder daughter Esra, who is married to the up-and-coming Energy Minister Berat Albayrak, has three children.
Erdogan has often annoyed feminists and women’s activists with his comments on sex and family planning.
In a speech marking International Women’s Day this year, he said he believed that “a woman is above all else a mother”.
In 2014, he described birth control as a “treason” which risked causing a whole generation to “dry up”.
And he has famously urged mothers to have four children, saying: “one (child) means loneliness, two means rivalry, three means balance and four means abundance.”
According to the statistics office, Turkey’s population rose to 78.741 million last year. The population in 2000 was less than 68 million.

WHO says Zika response plan only 13 percent funded

The World Health Organization’s Zika response programme is only 13 percent funded, “severely” compromising efforts to combat the virus that is increasingly becoming a global threat, the UN agency said Monday.
But the significant funding gaps in the $17.7-million (15.9-million-euro) plan are not having a major impact on Brazil’s efforts to keep the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro safe, WHO spokeswoman Nyka Alexander told AFP.
The UN agency last week rejected a call from 150 international doctors to change the timing or location of the Rio Games, with Brazil the country hardest hit by the Zika outbreak.
WHO said that shifting the Games would not substantially alter the risks of Zika spreading globally, but has urged athletes and visitors heading to Rio to take extra precaution against the mosquito-borne virus.
The organisation has advised women who are pregnant or planning to become pregnant to stay away altogether.
The virus can cause birth defects including microcephaly in which babies are born with unusually small heads and brains, as well as a potentially fatal neurological disorder called Guillian-Barre Syndrome.
WHO has provided technical advice to Brazil’s health ministry during the Zika crisis, in areas ranging from patient care to mosquito control strategies, Alexander said in an email.
But “the implementation of WHO’s advice and guidance is being prioritised … by other funding, including from the government of Brazil,” so the impact of the UN budget gaps is limited with respect to the Olympics, Alexander said.
“That having been said, it is clear that WHO’s ability to support the 60 countries currently affected by Zika — and to support other at-risk countries to prepare for the possible arrival of Zika — will continue to be severely compromised if we and other health partners are not sufficiently funded,” she added.
Zika cases have by far been most heavily concentrated in the Americas.
The $8.1-million virus response plan of WHO’s regional office, called the Pan American Health Organization, is only 20 percent funded, the UN body said in a report.
Rashford signs new Man United contract
Teenage breakthrough star Marcus Rashford has signed a new contract committing him to Manchester United until 2020 with an option for a further year, the club announced on Monday.
In the first major squad announcement since Jose Mourinho was appointed manager last week, Rashford and fellow academy graduate Cameron Borthwick-Jackson have both committed their futures to the club.
Rashford, 18, has scored eight goals in 18 appearances for United since breaking onto the scene in February and is now in contention for a place in England’s Euro 2016 squad.
“I am delighted to have signed a new contract,” Rashford said in a press release.
“I have always been a Manchester United fan so to be playing in the first team really is a dream come true. I am grateful for having the chance to prove myself.
“To be able to play football at the biggest club in the world means everything to me and my family.”
Rashford scored within three minutes of kick-off on his England debut in Friday’s 2-1 win over Australia, enhancing his claim to a place in manager Roy Hodgson’s final 23-man squad.
“Marcus is a naturally talented footballer with great potential,” said United executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward. “He has taken his chances well and has integrated into the first team very quickly.
“I am delighted that Marcus has signed a new contract. He is at the right club to continue his development.
“He is still very young and we need to be patient, but he is developing in the right way and we believe he has a great future ahead of him.”
Like Rashford, Borthwick-Jackson has signed a four-year contract with an option for a further year.
The 19-year-old left-back made his United debut last November and went on to make 14 appearances.
“Last season was an incredible experience to make my first-team debut and a dream come true for myself and my family,” he said.
“I feel it stands me in good stead for continuing my development as a Manchester United player.”
Guardiola news hurt Man City says Pellegrini
The announcement of Pep Guardiola’s appointment by Manchester City had a negative impact on the team’s performances, outgoing manager Manuel Pellegrini said in an interview published on Monday.
City were second in the Premier League when Pellegrini revealed on February 1 that Bayern Munich coach Guardiola would be succeeding him, but finished fourth after winning only six of their last 15 games.
While Pellegrini succeeded in steering City to League Cup glory and into the Champions League semi-finals for the first time, he harbours regrets over his decision to make Guardiola’s appointment public.
“If I ask if I would do that again, I have some doubts,” Pellegrini told The Guardian. “I don’t want to use (this) as an excuse, but it was so difficult to work after that. Not for me, for the players.”
He added: “It was my decision. After Guardiola said he was coming to England, it was my decision because all the media was talking about Guardiola here, Guardiola in Arsenal, Guardiola in Manchester United.
“It was not fair for all managers, when everyone knew he was coming here.”
Pointing to the run of three straight league defeats that followed the announcement, Pellegrini said: “The most difficult thing in a group is when you break something.
“Something was broken in that moment so, as I say, the complete glass is broken.”
Pellegrini’s contract with City does not expire until June 30 and although the season is now over, he is continuing to work at the club’s training centre.
He has previously stated that he would prefer to remain in England, but he told The Guardian that if the right job does not come up, he could retire.
“If I don’t have a really interesting option I will stop until I find one,” said the 62-year-old Chilean, who led City to two Premier League titles and two League Cups during his three-year tenure.
“If I have to stop, I will stop. It can be now, (until) December, one year or forever. Of course, I would miss it. The challenge keeps me alive.”
British PM, London mayor bury hatchet for pro-EU rally
Prime Minister David Cameron put aside recent animosity with London Mayor Sadiq Khan to make a joint call Monday for Britain to stay in the European Union, as personal attacks from within his own party intensified.
Cameron told a campaign event in London that he and the new Labour mayor backed Britain’s EU membership because “we love our country and we want our country to be the best it possibly can,” just weeks after accusing Khan of repeatedly appearing with Muslim extremists.
“I’m proud to be here with the Labour mayor of London,” said Cameron.
“He is the son of a bus driver and it makes an important point about our country: in one generation someone who is a proud Muslim, a proud Brit and a proud Londoner can become mayor of the greatest city on earth.”
Last month, Labour MPs had branded Cameron racist after he told parliament he was “concerned” about Labour’s mayoral candidate who had “appeared again and again and again” on stage with “extremists”.
Khan admitted there were there “many things upon which the prime minister and I will disagree,” but said “when it’s in London’s interest for the mayor of London and the government to work closely together, we will work closely together”.
While Cameron was building bridges with former adversaries, dissent within his own ranks escalated with some Tory MPs demanding he quit even if the country voted to remain in the bloc at the June 23 referendum.
– ‘Cameron is toast’ –
Andrew Bridgen and Nadine Dorries — both pro-“Brexit” and longstanding opponents of the prime minister — said Sunday they could stage a leadership coup in the event of a tight result.
“If ‘remain’ win by a narrow majority, or if ‘leave’ win, he’s toast within days,” Dorries told ITV, while Bridgen said there were 50 Tory MPs who could force a no-confidence vote on Cameron — a claim doubted by senior Tories on both sides of the referendum debate.
Cameron also came under fire from senior pro-Brexit Tories Boris Johnson and Michael Gove, who said his pledge to reduce immigration had “corroded public trust” as latest figures showed a marked increase.
Speaking on Monday, the prime minister praised the “incredibly broad range” of support with the “remain” camp.
“It’s a campaign that include trade unions and business, the Labour party, the Green party, the Liberal Democrat party and a Conservative government,” he said, highlighting his own party’s lack of unity.
Cameron admitted he himself was “a eurosceptic”, but said his campaign’s criticisms of the EU were a strength because “we are levelling with people, which is something the other side refuses to do”.
He also rejected claims that the unusual alliances were evidence of an “establishment conspiracy”.
“It would be a pretty exquisite conspiracy that could bring together the London mayor son of a bus driver and the Tory son of a stockbroker prime minister,” he said.
Russian President Putin warns he'll retaliate against NATO missiles, Nato replies; Your threats are irresponsible!
Russian President Vladmir Putin has issued a stern warning against NATO (North Atlantic Treaty Organization) saying his country's military will retaliate against NATO missiles after the U.S launched a ground-based missile defense system earlier this month in Romania, a country very close to Russia.
The U.S claim the missile system is meant to defend Europe against rogue states like Iran and not intended to target Moscow's missiles but Putin says he will do anything to protect his country and it's security forces even if it mean's retaliating against NATO.
The U.S claim the missile system is meant to defend Europe against rogue states like Iran and not intended to target Moscow's missiles but Putin says he will do anything to protect his country and it's security forces even if it mean's retaliating against NATO.
NATO, said the missiles could not be used offensively as they don't include explosives and are designed to simply "punch" targets out of the sky and have slammed Putin's threats calling it 'unjustified and irresponsible'.
Putin issued his threat during a news conference Friday after meeting with Greek Prime Minister Aleksis Tsipras in Athens.
"If yesterday in those areas of Romania people simply didn't know what it means to be in the cross hairs, then today we will be forced to carry out certain measures to ensure our security," Putin said.
"Any threats from Russia are unjustified and irresponsible," said NATO spokeswoman Oana Lungescu. "Russia knows full well that our Ballistic Missile Defense system is defensive and neither designed nor directed against Russia."
"It will be the same case with Poland," Putin warned. "We will wait until Poland takes certain action. We won't take any action until we see rockets in areas that neighbor us."
Military officials in the U.S are taking Putin's threats seriously, as the Russian president is one who never goes back on his threats.
"I don't think he wants to get into an armed confrontation with NATO," Military analyst Lt. Col. Rick Francona (ret.) told CNN.
"but of course Washington has to look at this. He is a very maniacal personality and we're not quite sure how he's going to react to this."
The North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) is an intergovernmental military alliance that constitutes a system of collective defence whereby its member states agree to mutual defense in response to an attack by any external party. NATO currently has 28 member countries namely Belgium, Canada, Denmark, France, Iceland, Italy, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, the United Kingdom, United States, Greece, Turkey, Germany, Spain, the Czech Republic, Hungary,Poland, Bulgaria, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia,Albania and Croatia. A Russian retaliation against NATO will likely cause a World War 3.

Man and wife torture their 4-year-old daughter to death, hide her body in freezer for one week
A 26-year-old Kuwaiti citizen tortured his four-year old daughter to death and kept the body in a new freezer to conceal the crime. The corpse remained in the freezer for one week before the parents (suspect and his wife) were arrested.
A security source said security men received information that a Kuwaiti citizen had killed his four-year old daughter few days earlier and kept the body in a flat in Hawalli area. Acting on information, detectives conducted the necessary investigation and arrested the victim’s father. (Pictured is the apartment belonging to the suspects and father of the child)
He admitted the crime during questioning and confirmed that his 23-year old wife participated in the killing while they were under the influence of intoxicant. Public Relations and Media Information said investigations revealed that the suspect wrapped his daughter’s body with a shroud and kept it inside the freezer.
It also revealed that experts discovered traces of burns on the shoulders and feet, indicating she was tortured to death. It also said the parents neglected the welfare of their four children, while the father was sacked from his job in a private company due to misconduct. The man and his wife have since been referred for further investigation.
