Istanbul Airport suspected ISIS bombers were Uzbek, Russian, Kyrgyz - Turkish official

Three suspected Islamic State (ISIS) suicide bombers who killed 43 people in a gun and bomb attack at Istanbul's main airport this week were Russian, Uzbek and Kyrgyz nationals, a Turkish government official said on Thursday June 30.

The suicide bombers opened fire to create panic outside, before two of them got inside the terminal building and blew themselves up. The third detonated his explosives at the entrance. At least 239 people were wounded in the attack.

According to Reuters, the Turkey official who confirmed the terrorists' nationalities, declined to be named because details of the investigation have not yet been released. Forensics teams had been struggling to identify the bombers from their limited remains, officials said earlier.
"A medical team is working around the clock to conclude the identification process," one of the officials said.
Interior Minister Efkan Ala told parliament that evidence continued to point to ISIS responsibility and that the death toll had risen to 43, of whom 19 were foreigners. Ala said the identity and nationality of one of the bombers had been determined but did not comment further.

The pro-government Yeni Safak newspaper said the Russian bomber was from Dagestan, which borders Chechnya. Turkey's Hurriyet newspaper named him as Osman Vadinov and said he had come from Raqqa, the heart of Islamic State-controlled territory in Syria.

The Russian interior ministry said it was checking information about Vadinov. A spokesman for Kyrgyzstan's state security service said it was investigating, while the Uzbek security service had no immediate comment.

I started car snatching in 2015 when I met Amandi, he was our informant. He lured me into robbery. I was only supplying them with arms. It all started when Amandi brought two vehicles. He gave them to one Victor Nwogu to sell. I met them doing the negotiation and from there, I offered to join them.
"I robbed the driver of a Toyota Camry at D-line area of Port Harcourt  and we  took the car to Victor in Owerri, I sold the car to victor for N200,000.  We were three and  I took N70,000 and I gave Amandi and Kelvin the balance to share. On the second operation, the three of us went for the job at  D-line and we stole three Camry cars from the park. We sold the vehicles to the same Victor in Owerri and he paid us N360,000. I got N150,000 as my share.
"We also snatched a Toyota Corolla, from Elelanwan area at gunpoint from its owner and I took the car to Victor and he paid N250,000. I took N80,000 as my share and I gave the rest to Amandi and Kelvin to share.

The gang members enjoyed full protection from Oboko, who bailed and defended them whenever they were arrested by the police. He provided fake vehicle documents for stolen vehicles and altered the vehicle engine and chassis numbers selling them, Ms Kolawole added.

Court strikes out suit challenging Buhari’s certificate

The Federal High Court, Abuja, on Thursday struck out the suit challenging the academic credentials of President Muhammadu Buhari.

Justice Adeniyi Ademola struck out the suit following a notice of discontinuance filed by the plaintiff, Mr Nnamdi Nwokocha-Ahaiwe.

Ademola had reserved ruling for Thursday on an application asking the court to stay execution of a judgment it earlier granted against the defendants.

When the matter was mentioned, Mr Chikordi Okeorji, counsel to Nwokocha-Ahaiwe, informed the court that the plaintiff had filed a notice of discontinuance.

Okeorji said the notice was pursuant to order 50 rule 2 (1) of the Federal High Court Rules, adding that the notice of discontinuance was filed on June 27.

Defendant’s counsel Paul Ajiboye did not oppose the application, but complained that he was not served.
Ademola then struck out the suit.
Nwokocha-Ahaiwe, an Abuja-based lawyer, had filed an application asking the court to nullify the election of Buhari as president.

He said that Buhari did not possess the minimum academic requirements needed to contest for the position of president.

The plaintiff also alleged that Buhari did not sat for the Cambridge West African School Certificate (WASC) in 1961 as he had earlier claimed.

But, Buhari raised a preliminary objection that he was not properly served.

In his preliminary objection, the president challenged the mode of service of the originating summons on him.
He insisted that he ought to have been served at an address in Kaduna instead of by substituted means at the national secretariat of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Abuja.

Ademola had dismissed the preliminary objection on the grounds that it was incompetent and upheld the service of the originating court processes on Buhari.

The judge said that the service of the court’s processes on the president through the secretariat of the APC was proper.

Buhari, who was not satisfied with the court’s ruling, took the matter to the Court of Appeal.
He prayed the appellate court to set aside or discharge the ex parte order granted in favour of Nwokocha-Ahaiwe on Feb. 16, 2015, to serve him with the originating summons by substituted means.
The president also sought the court to make an order setting aside Ahaiwe’s originating summons for being incompetent.

Following the appeal, Ademola had adjourned the matter sine die.
The judge, however, announced on Wednesday that he would deliver judgment on Thursday on the application to stay execution on his earlier ruling.

Slutsky out as Russia coach after Euro debacle

Russia coach Leonid Slutsky has officially severed his ties with the national team after they crashed out of Euro 2016 without a win, the country’s football union said Thursday.

The union announced in the statement the “end of cooperation” with Slutsky and thanked him for helping Russia qualify for the Euro.

After a disappointing Euro campaign plagued by poor performances on the pitch and hooliganism in the stands, Slutsky said last week he would resign to let another coach manage the national team as Russia gears up to host the World Cup in 2018.

Russia finished the tournament in France last in Group B after drawing with England and losing to Wales and Slovakia.

Slutsky, who also coaches CSKA Moscow, was hired last August after Italian Fabio Capello was dismissed after a string of dismal performances left Russia looking set to miss out on the Euro.

He oversaw a dramatic change in the team’s fortunes that saw them qualify for the tournament but failed to translate that momentum into success in France.

It remains unclear who could fill the position and the football union did not provide a timeline for the appointment of a new head coach.

Football bosses in the country face a choice between continuing with a homegrown coach or turning back to a foreign manager, but experts say whoever comes next faces a tough task to reinvigorate the squad.

Sports minister Vitaly Mutko said that foreign trainers and “even a woman” could be considered for the job, RIA Novosti state news agency reported.

The Melbourne and Manchester clubs are both owned by Abu Dhabi-based City Football Group and the Australian team’s managing director Brian Marwood said it was great opportunity for Mooy.

Southampton on Thursday named Frenchman Claude Puel as their new coach on a three-year deal.

The 54-year-old former Monaco and Nice boss replaces Ronald Koeman, who left for English Premier League rivals Everton earlier this summer.

Former Aston Villa coach Eric Black has been named as Puel’s assistant.

“Claude clearly came out on top of a very impressive shortlist. We have not only got the best man, but the right coaching team to support him,” said Southampton’s executive director of football Les Reed.

“Eric Black has an excellent pedigree as a coach and vast experience domestically and internationally. Pascal Plancque has an excellent record as a technical coach and, like Claude, has been responsible for developing many young French talents into top quality players.

“Claude has a fantastic platform to work from and is aware that our ambition is to repeat and improve on our performances in the Premier League over the past three seasons.

“Claude has a track record of improving the situations he has been presented with and we are confident he can repeat this at Southampton.”

Puel, who as a player turned out more than 500 games for Monaco, last season guided Nice to fourth in France.

As well as his run to the Champions League and French League victory at Monaco, Puel also led Lyon to the Champions League semi-final in 2010, and guided Lille to a 2004 Intertoto Cup and a French league runners up spot in 2005.

“His Champions League and European experience will be valuable in our Europa League challenge this coming season and with the support of our excellent staff at the club I am sure he will do well,” Reed said of Puel.

“We are once again excited about what the new season will bring, and we will continue to chase records as we have done in recent years.”

Barca agree deal for France defender Umtiti

Barcelona have agreed a 25-million-euro move for France defender Samuel Umtiti from Lyon, the Spanish giants announced Thursday.

Barca president Josep Maria Bartomeu said: “Barca have reached an agreement with Lyon to sign him, but it has to be negotiated with the player.

“There’s an agreement for 25 million euros.”

Cameroon-born Umtiti, 22, is currently with the France Euro 2016 squad and looks set to win his first cap in Sunday’s quarter-final against Iceland after the suspension of Adil Rami.

Although he is relatively inexperienced at the top level, Umtiti’s focus, calm, technical ability and pin-point passing as well as a sense of team spirit means he is widely expected to fit in at a top team.

Bartomeu added: “He is with the French team, completely focused. When the competition is over, we’ll make him come, pass the check-up and do all the required procedures to sign him up.”

Two transgender women running for US Congress could make history

Two transgender women, 30 year old Misty K. Snow (Democrat), a grocery store clerk from Salt Lake City, Utah and 33 year old Misty Plowright (Democrat) who is a military veteran and works in IT in Colorado won their state primaries on Tuesday night and have been selected to run for spots in the US Congress in November. This will be a first in major-party American political history.
Misty K. Snow will run against Republican  favorite Sen. Mike Lee in Utah this November, while Misty Plowright will challenge Rep. Doug Lamborn in Colorado.

Snow beat her primary opponent, Jonathan Swinton, by almost 20% points, criticizing him for supporting limitations on abortion rights, according to a Salt Lake Tribune report.
“While I’m not running on the basis of being a trans woman, my experiences as a trans woman have given me the empathy to understand the struggles of groups that feel that the American Dream is out of reach,” Snow said in her statement. “I’m running to give a voice to the voiceless.”
Plowright, on the other hand earned the Democratic nomination in Colorado by winning more than 13,000 votes while her opponent earned just over 9,600.

Both, if elected, would be the party’s first transgender women in U.S. Congress
