Super Eagles to play two friendly games in June

Determined to ensure that Nigeria qualified for the Russia 2018 FIFA World Cup, the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has arranged two friendly games for the Super Eagles, officials of the federation have disclosed.
The games, to be played in London in June, according to the federation, has been arranged by the new foreign coach, who will soon take over the Super Eagles.
NFF president, Amaju Pinnick, told journalists in Lagos on Thursday that the federation had reached an agreement with the foreign technical adviser, who in turn had started working to ensure that Nigeria utilized all the FIFA windows for quality friendly games.
Reports in the Internet yesterday added that the NFF has opened discussions with its London-based agent, who is expected to confirm the two top European countries for the friendly matches in the coming weeks.
It added that Pinnick was regularly in contact with the agent to ensure that the Eagles got two top grade A countries for the friendly matches.
Nigeria failed to qualify for the 2017 African Nations Cup and the feeling in the federation is that failure to make the 2018 World Cup would be a monumental disaster that could set the country’s football back many years.
An NFF official, who pleaded anonymity, said it was unfortunate that Nigerian football found itself in a situation that it has failed to make two consecutive African Nations Cup competitions despite the enormous talents available for the country. “So, we want to avoid another disaster hence the move to get everything in order before the next round of qualifiers for the World Cup.
“Fortunately, we have a crop of young players getting into the senior squads of their various clubs and with what we are doing now, I believe Nigeria will soon regain its position as Africa’s number one football nation,” he said.

Fighting erupts in Congo capital, thousands flee

Denis Sassou NguessoFighting erupted in the southern part of Congo’s capital Brazzaville on Monday, with heavy fire in opposition bastions between troops and unidentified assailants sending thousands of residents fleeing.
By late morning, AFP reporters saw streams of people panicked by the gunfire heading north away from districts loyal to the opposition, which is contesting President Denis Sassou Nguesso’s recent re-election.
The reason for the clashes was not immediately clear and no official comment was immediately available.
According to several witnesses, the crackle of automatic gunfire began after 2:00am (0100 GMT) in Makelekele and Mayana districts, and continued without stop until dawn.
Several explosions were heard and two police stations reportedly torched in the restive run-down districts, strongholds of Congo’s opposition.
“Soldiers came and told us to leave before it was too late, now we don’t know where to go,” said a 24-year-old student who gave her name as Mercie.
By 8:15am, the gunfire had become sporadic although witnesses across the Congo river in northern Kinshasa, capital of the neighbouring Democratic Republic of Congo, also reported hearing explosions.
In mid-morning hundreds of police and troops, some in armoured vehicles, fanned out across the city’s southern areas.
Security forces threw up roadblocks on the main road between the south and the city centre, stopping all cars for checks.
– ‘Terrified’ –
“I couldn’t stand the sound of the bullets and the heavy arms, I’m terrified,” a 55-year-old called Jerome told AFP.
The clashes erupted as Congo’s Constitutional Court examines results from the March 20 presidential election won by veteran leader Denis Sassou Nguesso but denounced by five defeated candidates who have alleged “massive fraud”.
Sassou Nguesso, a former paratrooper colonel in office for 32 years, was declared winner with over 60 percent of the vote.
Last week, several southern districts observed a strike called in protest over the results in a country of biting poverty where oil riches only benefit a fraction of the population.
Congo has been on edge since an October constitutional referendum that ended a two-term limit on presidential mandates, allowing the head of state to run again.
Critics accuse the president of rampant corruption and nepotism, blasting the referendum result as a “constitutional coup”.
Former colonial power France on Monday called for “restraint” and urged French citizens to stay at home.
Sassou Nguesso served as president from 1979 to 1992 and returned to power in 1997 following a civil war.
He won two successive terms in 2002 and 2009, but both elections were contested by opposition parties.

Nigerian troops of 22 Brigade Garrison, Army Headquarters Strike Group (AHQ SG) on Sunday arrested six suspected Boko Haram terrorists and recovered improvised explosive devices (IED) devices.
“The patrol team captured 3 Boko Haram terrorists at Kadawu and recovered 4 motorcycles, 3 bicycles, 1 solar panel and 2 liquid herbicides,” Defence spokesman Brigadier-General Rabe Abubakar said in a statement. “At Garna, the troops also captured 3 and recovered 7 locally made guns from them.”
The soldiers also rescued 275 persons held hostage by the Boko Haram terrorists, Abubakar said.
One of the rescued persons gave birth to a baby boy shortly after their liberation. Both mother and the child are doing fine, according to the DHQ spokesman.
Abubakar also said troops of 152 Task Force Battalion alongside troops of Sector 1 of Multinational Joint Task Force yesterday, cleared suspected hideouts and bomb-making factory of Boko Haram terrorists around Madawaya while 15 terrorists were killed in the process.
Suspected terrorist camps in Jere, Kardile, Koujili, Ngenere and Maksamari, as well as Douse, Bembem, Zombulum and Taraji villages, were also cleared.
“They also discovered and destroyed the Boko Haram terrorists’ IED making factory at Bula Umara and killed 15 terrorists in the same area. In addition, the troops recovered an AK-47 rifle, 4 fully loaded magazines with 7.62mm ammunition, 2 power generating sets, welding machines, assorted batteries and solar panels.
“Other items recovered include drums of beans and other grains as well as Bandolier.”
Abubakar said the troops recovered several vehicles and motorcycles.

Army arrests leader of Boko Haram splinter group, Al-Barnawi

Nigerian forces recorded a major success in the fight against terrorism by arresting the leader of the Ansaru jihadist group, Khalid al-Barnawi in Kogi State on Friday.
Ansaru is a splinter group of Boko Haram.
“Security agents made a breakthrough on Friday in the fight against terrorism by arresting Khalid al-Barnawi, the leader of Ansaru terrorist group in Lokoja,” Defence Headquarters  spokesman Brigadier General Rabe Abubakar said on Sunday.
“He is among those on the top of the list of our wanted terrorists,”
Khalid al-Barnawi is one of three Nigerian terrorists listed by the United States government in 2012 as “specially designated global terrorists”. The other two are Boko Haram leader Abubakar Shekau and Ansaru founder Abubakar Adam Kambar.
“He is among those on top of the list of our wanted terrorists,” Abubakar added.
Barnawi, 47, whose real name is Usman Umar Abubakar, hailed from Biu town in restive northeast Borno state. He became the leader of Ansaru following the death of Kambar in a military raid on his hideout in Kano in March 2012.
The group claimed a 2012 attack on a maximum security facility in Abuja where detained Islamists were being held, killing two policemen and freeing 40 inmates.
With the emergence of Ansaru, Barnawi’s faction became independent of Boko Haram but still maintained ties.
The group also claimed responsibility for the kidnap of a French engineer, Francis Collomp, in northern Katsina state in 2012. He later escaped.
The group said it was responsible for a 2013 attack on a convoy of Mali-bound Nigerian troops in Kogi state, killing two soldiers and seriously wounding five others.
It issued a statement condemning Nigeria’s participation in the “war against the Islamic state of northern Mali”.

Captain Morgan sends Leicester seven points clear

Leicester City captain Wes Morgan scored his first goal in almost a year as the Premier League fairytale-title chasers edged Southampton 1-0 on Sunday to establish a potentially decisive seven-point lead.
Tottenham Hotspur’s 1-1 draw at Liverpool on Saturday had given Claudio Ranieri’s men an opportunity to strengthen their grip on first place and they duly took it courtesy of Morgan’s 38th-minute header.
It was Leicester’s fifth 1-0 victory in six matches and with just six games of the season remaining, the 132-year-old club’s first ever top-flight title is now tantalisingly within sight.
The east Midlands side were bottom of the table a year ago, but require just 12 points from a possible 18 to complete one of the most sensational underdog triumphs in world football history.
Ronald Koeman’s Southampton, who had two penalty appeals for handball turned away, remain seventh and face an uphill battle to force their way into the Europa League berths.
With chairman Vichai Srivaddhanaprabha laying on free doughnuts and bottles of beer for home fans to mark his birthday and ‘Leicester City Champions 2016’ scarves for sale on the walk to the ground, the atmosphere could barely have been more festive at a sun-soaked King Power Stadium.
In a bid to counter Leicester’s two-pronged strike-force of Jamie Vardy and Shinji Okazaki, Southampton deployed a back three and while the home side made the early running, the clearest opportunities of the first half fell to the visitors.
Their best chance saw Graziano Pelle free Sadio Mane, who rounded Kasper Schmeichel and shot, only for the ball to strike Danny Simpson’s right forearm as he came across to cover the vacant goal.
Southampton appealed for a penalty, but the right-back’s arm had remained close to his body so referee Michael Oliver waved play on.
– Austin appeal –
Pelle also headed over from a Cedric Soares cross, while Jose Fonte fully extended Schmeichel with a rising drive from 25 yards and Jordie Clasie shot narrowly over after outmuscling Riyad Mahrez.
But with Southampton poised to poop the party, Leicester struck, Christian Fuchs guiding a cross into the box from the left flank and Morgan outjumping Clasie to plant a captain’s header inside the left-hand post.
Dusan Tadic replaced Matt Targett at half-time for Southampton, who changed to a 4-2-3-1 system, but they were almost undone within seconds of the restart, with Victor Wanyama booked for putting an arm in Vardy’s face as the England striker looked to burst clear.
Just past the hour, it took a superb one-handed stop from Southampton goalkeeper Fraser Forster to prevent Fonte steering Danny Drinkwater’s cross into his own net.
Ten minutes later Forster was at it again, parrying from right on the goal-line after Simpson took aim at a gaping goal from Vardy’s low cross.
Koeman had seen his side come from 2-0 down to beat Liverpool 3-2 in their previous game and he threw caution to the wind by sending on Charlie Austin and James Ward-Prowse for Clasie and Steven Davis.
Seconds after coming on Austin had a strong penalty appeal when his shot struck Robert Huth’s outstretched left hand, but to the frustration of Southampton — and Tottenham, Arsenal and Manchester City — Oliver was again unmoved.
Vardy might have settled the home nerves late on, only for Forster to repel his prodded effort, but it mattered not.

Nigerian Sports Minister says no to foreign coach, says Samson Siasia will continue

NFF President Amaju Pinnick last week said the NFF will hire a foreign coach to take on the affairs of the Super Eagles as they aim to qualify for the 2018 World Cup in Russia after missing out on AFCON 2017, but Nigeria's Youth and sports Minister Solomon Dalung has insisted that the trend of hiring and sacking coaches by the NFF must stop.

Solomon Dalung who spoke in Abuja to newsmen implied that Samson Siasia will be left to continue his job as the Super Eagles head coach.
“The hiring and firing of coaches is a problem, when shall we have an end to it? In my view, we place personal interest above national interest. You don’t access a coach with one match. You give him ample opportunity and generate correct data to access his performance. The hiring and firing of coaches just on one performance speaks volumes of senses of judgement and it does not augur well for our football. It must stop now,” said the sports minister.

South Africa parliament to consider Zuma impeachment

The South African parliament will next week discuss an opposition motion to impeach President Jacob Zuma after country’s highest court ruled that he flouted the constitution, an official said Sunday.
The speaker of parliament Baleka Mbete told journalists that the move by the Democratic Alliance (DA) would be considered on April 5.
The DA is pushing for Zuma to be impeached after the Constitutional Court on Thursday ruled that he had “failed to uphold, defend and respect the constitution” in ignoring the ombudswoman’s directives to repay a portion of public funds used to upgrade his private residence.
“The national assembly will on Tuesday, 5 April, consider a motion by the Democratic Alliance for the removal of the President in terms of section 89 of the constitution,” said Mbete.
Zuma, whose ruling African National Congress (ANC) commands a strong grip on parliament, is likely to survive any bid to have him removed.
A previous impeachment attempt in 2015 over failure to arrest Sudanese leader Omar al-Bashir fell flat when parliament voted overwhelmingly against it.
The violation of the constitution verdict stems from the controversial 2009 security upgrades on Zuma’s home at Nkandla village, in the eastern KwaZulu-Natal province.
The project which cost the taxpayers 216 million rand (then $24 million) in 2014, included a swimming pool, chicken run, cattle enclosure and an amphitheatre.
A 2014 report by the country’s Public Protector found that Zuma and his family “unduly benefited” from the improvements, ordering him to pay back some of the money.
The ANC has rallied behind Zuma since the damning Constitutional Court ruling, but some party veterans including Ahmed Kathrada, an anti-apartheid stalwart jailed with Nelson Mandela on Robben Island, have called for him to step down.
Zuma, 73, will complete his second term in office in 2019.

No increment in prices of petrol, kerosene, says PPPRA

Contrary to expectations that it would review upward prices of petroleum products, the Petroleum Products Pricing Regulatory Agency (PPPRA), on Sunday, said the current prices would be maintained, at least, in the second quarter of the year.
According to the statement by Lanre Oladele, PPPRA’s head of corporate services, the agency will retain the retail prices of N86.00 for the NNPC, and N86.50 for the other Marketing companies.
It added that the pump price of Household Kerosene (HHK) would also remain unchanged from what it was in the last quarter.
“Therefore, marketers are advised to ensure that there is no price distortion in their respective retail outlets.”
Further in the statement, the agency said the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation, NNPC, would have 41.73 per cent allocation for the supply of Premium Motor Spirit in the second quarter.
“The NNPC has 41.73 per cent of the total allocation while the rest of the oil Marketing Companies got a total allocation of 58.27 per cent.
The statement added that PPPRA would continue to monitor the global oil market performances and make reasonable changes consistent with the newly-adopted price modulation principles.
It appealed to depot owners to strictly adhere to the prevailing truck-out policy made by the agency, to ensure that petroleum products got to their designated retail outlets nationwide.
It warned that adequate sanctions awaited any depot-owner found to be hoarding products.
On the news making the rounds that the agency was planning to increase the pump-price, it urged members of the public to ignore such rumour, as prevailing market indicators did not support such.
“PPPRA is resolutely committed to the sustenance of its reform initiatives, in order to further guarantee the adequate supply of products nationwide.
“We, therefore, assure Nigerians of our total commitment to service delivery, in the quest to deliver on our mandate to the people of Nigeria,” the statement said.
It urged motorists to desist from panic-buying, as PPPRA was working hard with other sister-organisations to ensure that the current supply and distribution challenges were resolved within the coming days.

Martial the match-winner as United honour Charlton

Manchester United's French striker Anthony Martial (R) shakes hands with Manchester United's Dutch defender Timothy Fosu-Mensah (L) at the end of the English Premier League football match between Manchester United and Everton at Old Trafford in Manchester, north west England, on April 3, 2016. / AFP / OLI SCARFF / RESTRICTED TO EDITORIAL USE. Anthony Martial scored the only goal of the game as Manchester United beat Everton 1-0 in the Premier League at Old Trafford on Sunday to climb within a point of fourth-placed local rivals Manchester City.
Martial’s 54th-minute strike gave the French striker his 13th goal of the season and helped United celebrate the fact that Old Trafford’s south stand had been renamed in honour of club great Bobby Charlton in fine fashion.
Victory kept alive United boss Louis van Gaal’s hopes of qualifying for the Champions League — the top four clubs in England get a spot — and thus satisfying the minimum demand on an Old Trafford manager.
This was United’s fourth successive home win, a feat they managed for the first time since a six-match streak in April last year.
United have now won four of their last five league games, including the Manchester derby at the Etihad Stadium.
Everton, as befits a side with a better away record than at Goodison Park, began with clear attacking intent and the United defence had to be on its toes to deal with Ross Barkley and Romelu Lukaku.
Barkley was a lively influence and in the 12th minute he found Gerard Deulofeu on the right, the Belgian cutting into the penalty area past two tackles without being able to have a clear shot before Matteo Darmian cleared the danger.
Everton continued to delight their travelling contingent with their attacking style, and Leighton Baines saw one of his trademark free kicks diverted for a corner as the first half approached the halfway mark.
Lukaku finally had a glimpse of a chance when England centre-half Chris Smalling slipped but United goalkeeper David de Gea had anticipated the danger and won the race to hack clear.
Daley Blind once more won a one-on-one duel with Lukaku as the Belgian threatened to break away, while at the other end right back Seamus Coleman had to be precision-perfect with a challenge to deny the raiding Marcos Rojo in Everton’s penalty area.
United’s measured build-up does not always please their fans, but a patient passing move almost resulted in the breakthrough only for defender John Stones to halt Martial in the area.
Everton resumed after half-time in determined mood, and Blind did well to block Lukaku’s effort in the area when Baines threaded a pass through to the Belgian with his back to goal.
However, it was Martial who broke the deadlock when he got on the end of a delightful passing move that started with Juan Mata, was enhanced by a neat backheel by Marcus Rashford and completed by the striker, who converted at the far post when Coleman failed to connect with an attempted clearance.
It was Manchester United’s 1,000th home goal in the Premier League.
Everton, stung into a reaction, responded almost immediately when captain Phil Jagielka headed a corner against the bar but, as the match wore on, United closed out the game.

Mass grave of victims of IS found in Syria’s Palmyra

isis-fightersSyrian troops have found a mass grave containing the bodies of 42 people executed by Islamic State jihadists in Palmyra, as Washington warned the group’s leader will eventually “taste justice”.
IS has in recent months claimed responsibility for deadly attacks in Brussels and Paris, but has lost ground in Syria and Iraq.
Days after Syrian troops backed by Russian forces recaptured Palmyra and its ancient ruins, the army “uncovered a mass grave of officers, soldiers, members of the popular committees (pro-regime militia) and their relatives,” a military source told AFP on Saturday.
Twenty-four of the victims were civilians, including three children, he said, asking not to be named.
“They were executed either by beheading or by shooting.”
In a major symbolic and strategic coup for President Bashar al-Assad, the Syrian army last Sunday recaptured Palmyra and its UNESCO World Heritage Site, which IS had overrun in May 2015.
During their nearly 10-month occupation of Palmyra, the jihadists executed at least 280 people, according to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, a Britain-based monitor which confirmed the discovery of the mass grave.
Soon after IS stormed Palmyra, it shot dead 25 soldiers in the ancient Roman theatre.
It later released a video of the mass killing in which the executioners appeared to be children or teenagers.
Syria’s five-year war has left at least 270,000 people dead. Few mass graves have been found, however.
Nearly a week on, few of Palmyra’s up to 70,000 residents have returned.
– US mulls more special forces –
“People fear reprisal by the regime, and also the mines planted all over the city by IS,” Observatory director Rami Abdel Rahman told AFP.
“In addition, many houses were flattened by Russian air strikes before Palmyra was reclaimed,” he added.
About 70 kilometres (45 miles) to the west, Syrian troops on Saturday pounded the IS-held city of Sukhna, which the army wants to take back in order to consolidate its grip over Palmyra.
“If the regime takes Sukhna, it will use it as a launching pad for an operation against Deir Ezzor province,” in eastern Syria, along the Iraqi border, which is mostly controlled by IS, Abdel Rahman said.
The Syrian army has previously said the takeover of Palmyra would allow it to extend operations against IS in the east and around Raqa, the jihadists’ de facto capital in the north.
At least 40 mostly foreign IS members, including 18 child soldiers, were killed in raids Thursday on a village in Deir Ezzor province, the Observatory said.
It was one of the single highest tolls that IS has suffered in a single strike since it emerged in Syria in 2013, the monitor said.
A US official on Saturday said the Pentagon was mulling over the possibility of sending more special forces to join the anti-IS fight in Syria, where the contingent of American fighters current numbers around 50.
“Presumably they would do more of what they’re already doing,” said the official, who declined to be named.
– Baghdadi will ‘taste justice’ –
IS has lost a string of high-ranking commanders in the past few weeks, mainly to strikes by the US-led coalition which launched a campaign against the jihadists in 2014.
On Wednesday, a drone strike near Raqa, likely by the US-led coalition, killed Abu al-Haija, a Tunisian commander summoned by IS leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi from Iraq.
On Friday, the Pentagon warned that Baghdadi himself, who in 2014 appointed himself “caliph” of swathes of Iraq and Syria, would eventually be hunted down and killed.
“Just like we found his mentor, (Abu Musab) al-Zarqawi and killed him. Just like we found the grand master of terrorism, Osama bin Laden, we killed him. We are going to find Baghdadi, and he will taste justice,” military spokesman Colonel Steve Warren said.
While the truce has largely held, there have been reports of violence. The Observatory said regime air strikes on a rebel-held town east of Damascus Thursday left 33 dead, including 12 children.
Qatar condemned the raids with its foreign ministry warning that Syrian air strikes could “torpedo” the fragile ceasefire.
An unnamed Saudi foreign ministry source added in a statement that the kingdom condemns “in the strongest terms” the “ugly massacre by forces of Bashar al-Assad, the criminal.”
In Aleppo province, Al-Qaeda’s Syrian affiliate Al-Nusra Front and allied rebels seized the town of Al-Eis which overlooks a road linking second city Aleppo to Damascus, said the Observatory.
