French establishment decry Benzema racism claims

Karim Benzema’s claims that racism played a part in his non-selection for France’s Euro 2016 squad sparked a wave of indignation on Wednesday as politicians spoke out against the Real Madrid striker’s comments.

Under investigation over an alleged sex-tape blackmail case, Benzema told Spanish daily Marca that France coach Didier Deschamps had “bowed to pressure from a racist French party” in his selection process.

Patrick Kanner the French Sports Minister sympathised with Benzema’s predicament but rejected any attack on the national coach with just nine days to go before the start of the France hosted Euro 2016.

“I can understand Mr Benzema’s disappointment but under no circumstances are his statements acceptable regarding what he said about Mr Deschamps’ sporting decisions nor his personality,” Kanner said.

“I call for calm, I would like us to concentrate on the competition and would ask everyone to get behind ‘the Blues’ (the French team) which is what the 23 squad members will be expecting of us. So let’s stop this non-debate,” he insisted.

Socialist Party parliamentarian Benoit Hamon told France’s Europe 1 radio station Wednesday that Benzema was: “right to say we are in a country where racism is on the rise.” But he insisted there was no evidence of Deschamps being a racist.

François Fillon who was Prime Minister for five years between 2007-2012 and who is hoping to run in the next presidential election rejected Benzema’s position out of hand.

“I can’t stand for that!”

“Forever bringing the nation’s problems down to questions of race, religion and ethnic communities, it’s unhealthy,” he said.

— world class striker —
Benzema’s comments as reported in Marca echo similar accusations from the often controversial former French footballer Eric Cantona, who last week said Deschamps had excluded Benzema and Hatem Ben Arfa because of their North African heritage — drawing a threat of legal action from the coach’s lawyer.

Benzema, a world class striker with five seasons at Real Madrid, was suspended from international duty in December over a legal investigation into an alleged attempt by one of his friends to blackmail France international Mathieu Valbuena over a sex tape.

He faces up to five years in jail over accusations he encouraged Valbuena to pay the blackmailers.

“They said I cannot be selected, fine. But on a sporting level, I don’t understand why,” he said.

“At a legal level, I am still innocent until proven guilty. They should wait until the justice system has made its decision.”

His path to the French Euro 2016 squad was at one time cleared when legal restrictions stopping him playing were lifted and it seemed he would make the squad after all.

But then tough-talking French Prime Minister Manuel Valls and other politicians began to oppose any rehabilitation while the sex-tape inquiry goes on.

“The only person who knows what happened in this affair, who knows the truth, is Valbuena,” Benzema told Marca.

“He played a role, he has not told the truth. I wanted to help him, nothing more, and the whole thing blew up in my face.”

The exclusion of Ben Arfa and Benzema from the national squad has caused waves in France, which is struggling with racial tensions after two deadly terrorist attacks in Paris.

Ben Arfa, of Tunisian origin, had been hopeful of making the squad after relaunching his career at Nice, but instead had to settle for a place on Deschamps’s standby list of eight players.

Adding to the controversy, Cantona said in fresh comments published in Le Journal du Dimanche that without the two players, the squad does not reflect the France he loves.

Deschamps has refused to comment on Cantona’s accusations, although his lawyer last week said he planned to take legal action.

French Football Federation president Noel Le Graet dismissed Cantona’s initial comments as “stupid” and “pathetic”.

Another highly gifted French player of North African roots is Manchester City’s Samir Nasri, who was excluded from France’s 2014 World Cup squad after attitude issues.

Latest Ebola outbreak in Guinea is over

The latest outbreak of Ebola in Guinea has ended, the World Health Organization said Wednesday, warning that a recurrence of the killer tropical disease remained a threat.

The last known Ebola patient in the west African country was discharged from hospital in April.

WHO declares the end to an outbreak, also known as the end to viral transmission, 42 days after the last known patient tests negative for the second time.

“WHO commends the Government of Guinea and its people on ending this Ebola outbreak,” said Abou Bekr Gaye, the UN agency’s representative in Guinea.

He called for vigilance to “stop any new cases that may occur.”

In the three countries hit hardest by the Ebola crisis — Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone — fresh cases emerged after an outbreak was declared over.

The worst-ever Ebola epidemic began in Guinea in December 2013 and went on to kill more than 11,300 people, devastating economies and health systems in the worst affected countries, while testing the world’s capacity to respond to a global health emergency.

Mexican football player’s relative ordered kidnapping

Mexican authorities arrested on Tuesday a man married to a cousin of football star Alan Pulido, accusing the suspect of ordering the player’s high-profile kidnapping over the weekend.

Osvaldo Velazquez Garcia, 29, was wounded and detained in a house in the northeastern city of Ciudad Victoria after a shootout with federal police, said Tamaulipas state prosecutor Ismael Quintanilla.

Velazquez started shooting after he was surrounded, Quintanilla said. He was hit in the right shoulder and lightly wounded in the neck, but he is out of danger.

He was identified as the alleged mastermind of the kidnapping by a 38-year-old accomplice who was arrested late Sunday after Pulido managed to punch one captor and call the police.

“He’s the husband of a cousin” of Pulido’s, Quintanilla said, adding a new twist to a case that has drawn praise for Pulido’s heroics but also raised doubts about the official version of events.

The prosecutor said Velazquez was a member of a criminal organization linked to drug trafficking, kidnappings and extortion.

He did not identify the group, but the Zetas drug cartel is a force in one of the most dangerous regions in Mexico, plagued with homicides, kidnappings and thousands of disappearances.

Velazquez was present at a party that Pulido, a striker with Greek club Olympiakos, attended before he was kidnapped on Saturday, Quintanilla told a news conference.

The suspect communicated with the other kidnappers to tell them that the player had left the event and the type of car he was driving, the prosecutor said.

Pulido, who was part of Mexico’s 2014 World Cup team, had left the party with his girlfriend when they were intercepted by four gunmen, who let the woman go.

Authorities say Pulido was freed after he was left alone with one kidnapper in a two-story home and seized on the opportunity to beat up the suspect, take his phone away and call an emergency number.

Police found Pulido within minutes, barely 24 hours after he was kidnapped.

Pulido’s brother, Armando, who plays for Greek second division team Kissamikos, told Radio Imagen that there were about 40 people at the party.

The brothers sat at a table with a dozen friends and siblings of friends. Alan Pulido left with his girlfriend before his brother, and he was kidnapped minutes later.

He said the brothers do not hire security when they visit their hometown “because the people of Ciudad Victoria have always been very affectionate with us.”

“We never thought that something of this magnitude could happen,” he said.

The first contact with the kidnappers took place on Sunday around 2:00 pm when they called a relative, he said.

Armando Pulido handled the negotiations with the kidnappers, who demanded six million pesos in ransom.

When he told them that he could not get so much cash on a Sunday and that they give him until Monday, the man on the phone responded: “You’ll find him dead in the morning.”

Security experts and pundits have raised questions about the case, wondering how Pulido was able to overpower professional kidnappers in a state where criminal groups specialize in abductions and 5,500 people remain missing.

“If it’s true, then we are talking about a monumental degree of incompetence by the kidnappers,” Alejandro Hope, editor of ElDailyPost.com and a former Mexican intelligence agency official, told AFP.

The timing also raised eyebrows because the kidnapping occurred days before state elections on Sunday.

“It fuels suspicions even more,” wrote El Universal columnist Luis Cardenas.

But Quintanilla rejected speculation that the kidnapping was staged to influence the elections, saying it would take a “very large group of actors” to pull it off.

World’s longest rail tunnel set for grand opening

A train makes its way at the north entrance of the new Gotthard Base Tunnel the world's longest train tunnel on the eve of its opening ceremony on May 31, 2016 in Erstfeld. The new Gotthard Base Tunnel (GBT) is set to become the world's longest railway tunnel when it opens on June 1.The 57-kilometre (35.4-mile) tunnel, which runs under the Alps, was first conceived in sketch-form in 1947 but construction began 17 years ago. / AFP PHOTO / FABRICE COFFRINI

The world’s longest train tunnel will officially open on Wednesday, nearly seven decades after the initial design was conceived.

Switzerland’s 57-kilometre (35-mile) Gotthard Base Tunnel runs under the Alps from Erstfeld in the central canton of Uri, to Bodio in the southern Ticino canton.

The rough design for a rail tunnel under the Gotthard Pass was first sketched by Swiss engineer Carl Eduard Gruner in 1947.

But bureaucratic delays, concerns over the cost and other hurdles pushed back the start of construction until 1999.

Seventeen years and more than 12 billion Swiss francs ($12 billion, 11 billion euros) later, the Gotthard Base Tunnel is set for its inaugural journey.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel, French President Francois Hollande and Italian Prime Minister Matteo Renzi, along with Swiss officials, are due to be on board for the ceremonial first run.

When the full service opens in December, the tunnel will shave the train journey from Zurich to Milan in northern Italy down to two hours and 40 minutes, roughly an hour less than it currently takes.

The new route also aims to make rail freight more efficient — partly by supporting heavier cargo, which should reduce the number of diesel-guzzling lorries on the roads, improving traffic and curbing pollution.

The number of daily rail passengers is expected to increase from the current rate of 9,000 people to 15,000 by 2020, according to the Swiss federal railway service.

European Union transport commissioner Violeta Bulc last week described the new tunnel as a “godsend for Europe” which will serve as a “a vital link connecting Rotterdam (and) Antwerp with the ports of the Adriatic”.

The Gotthard project was largely made possible by technical advances in tunnel-boring machines, which replaced the costly and dangerous blast-and-drill method.

The primary machine used to make the Gotthard tunnel was roughly 410-metres long and functioned like a mobile factory.

It cuts through rock and throws the debris backwards while simultaneously placing the pre-formed segments of concrete that form the shape of the tunnel.

A separate system grouts the pieces together.

According to the Swiss rail service, it took 43,800 hours of non-stop work by 125 labourers rotating in three shifts to lay the tunnel’s slab track.

When it officially opens, the Gotthard will surpass Japan’s 53.9-kilometre Seikan tunnel as the world’s longest train tunnel.

The 50.5-kilometre Channel Tunnel that links England and France will be bumped into third place.

Benzema says Deschamps ‘bowed to racists’ over Euros snub

France’s top scorer Karim Benzema on Wednesday accused coach Didier Deschamps of bowing to pressure from a “racist” political party by not choosing him for the country’s Euro 2016 squad.

The Real Madrid striker, who is being investigated over an alleged sex-tape blackmail case, questioned whether Deschamps left him out because of his Algerian descent.

The comments echo similar accusations from French legend Eric Cantona, who last week said Deschamps had excluded Benzema and Hatem Ben Arfa because of their North African heritage — drawing a threat of legal action from the coach’s lawyer.

Benzema told Spanish daily Marca that Deschamps “bowed to pressure from a racist French party” in his selection, referencing the recent electoral success of France’s far-right National Front.

“I do not know if this decision was only down to Didier, because I get along with him, with the president (of the French Football Federation, Noel Le Graet) and everyone,” he said.

Benzema was suspended from international duty in December over a legal investigation into an alleged attempt by one of his friends to blackmail his team-mate Mathieu Valbuena over a sex tape.

France’s leading goal-scorer faces up to five years in jail over accusations he encouraged Valbuena to pay the blackmailers.

“They said I cannot be selected, fine. But on a sporting level, I don’t understand why,” he said.

“At a legal level, I am still innocent until proven guilty. They should wait until the justice system has made its decision.”

– Sex-tape inquiry –
Benzema remains France’s top striker, with 27 goals in 81 appearances, despite the emergence of the younger Antoine Griezmann and Anthony Martial.

His path to the French Euro 2016 squad was cleared when legal restrictions stopping him playing on the same team as Valbuena were lifted.

But French Prime Minister Manuel Valls and other politicians have opposed any rehabilitation while the sex-tape inquiry goes on.

FFF president Graet dismissed Cantona’s initial comments as “stupid” and “pathetic”.

Rashford’s rise hit new heights with Euro call-up

When Anthony Martial limped forlornly towards the Old Trafford tunnel it set Marcus Rashford off on a meteoric rise from unknown teenager to the rising star of England’s Euro 2016 challenge in less than 100 days.

Martial suffered a hamstring injury in the warm-up before Manchester United’s Europa League tie against FC Midtjylland in February. Rashford was the unexpected beneficiary as Louis van Gaal handed the 18-year-old his professional debut.

Rashford had been an unused substitute for two Premier League matches in November, but even the most ardent United fan could be excused for knowing little about the coltish striker when he trotted onto the pitch that evening.

Such was Rashford’s lowly status in the United pecking order that, but for injuries to Wayne Rooney, Adnan Januzaj and Will Keane, he would not even have been on the bench.

He also came into a United team desperately short of confidence as pressure mounted on van Gaal after a poor run of results.

Yet, rather than be overawed by his battlefield promotion, Rashford appeared to the manor born as he put into practice the advice of one of his youth coaches, who had urged him to play less like Cristiano Ronaldo and more like Ruud van Nistelrooy.

Displaying blistering pace, clever movement and a maturity beyond his tender years, Rashford’s predatory instincts went on full display. He struck twice in 12 minutes to inspire United’s 5-1 victory, prompting van Gaal to describe his performance as “unbelievable”.

If Rashford’s debut was a shock to van Gaal, it was even harder to take in for the unassuming teenager who just a few years earlier awoke every morning to a bedroom adorned with pictures of his United heroes.

Born in the modest Manchester suburb of Wythenshawe on Halloween in 1997, Rashford dreamt of pulling United’s famous red shirt from the moment he could kick a ball.

– Fairytale –
Rashford joined local youth club Fletcher Moss Rangers, where Wes Brown and Danny Welbeck, who both had spells with United, began to learn their trade.

As his talent quickly emerged, Rashford was courted by United and Manchester City, opting for Old Trafford because of the youth academy’s emphasis on skill development.

Even the scouts who spotted his potential could not have predicted Rashford would break a record previously held by the legendary George Best.

The brace against Midtjylland made him United’s youngest ever scorer in European competition, but it was no flash in the pan.

On his Premier League debut against Arsenal three days later, Rashford scored with his first shot, then netted again in the 3-2 victory.

The fairytale had another chapter in March when Rashford, who still lives with his mother Mel, bagged the winner at Manchester City, making him the youngest scorer in a Manchester derby in the Premier League era.

By the time Rashford walked off the Wembley pitch with an FA Cup winners medal around his neck after United’s victory over Crystal Palace last month, he was already entrenched as one of his club’s most important players.

Even England manager Roy Hodgson could not resist the prodigy’s appeal.

After initially playing down talk of selecting Rashford, Hodgson responded to his haul of eight goals in his first 18 United appearances by naming him in his provisional squad for the Euros.

With time running out before the tournament, Rashford was under pressure to make the most of his maiden appearance against Australia last Friday.

Once again he was completely unfazed and it took less than three minutes for Rashford to become the youngest player to score on his England debut with a cool volley that shattered Tommy Lawton’s 77-year old record.

United this week handed Rashford an improved £25,000 ($36,000) per week contract tying him to the club until 2020 and that was followed on Tuesday by his inclusion in England’s final 23-man squad for the Euros — just 96 days after he stepped out of the shadows as Martial’s replacement.

Messi aims to end Argentina’s Copa drought

Lionel Messi and Argentina will be targeting the country’s 23-year title drought when the Copa America Centenario kicks off on Friday after a troubled build-up marred by corruption allegations which threatened to derail the event.

One hundred years after Uruguay clinched the inaugural four-team South American championship in Argentina, 16 teams from across the Americas are gathered in the United States for a special one-off edition of the tournament.

The three-week festival of football gets under way at the Levi’s Stadium in California on Friday, when the United States face Colombia at the home of the San Francisco 49ers American football team.

The tournament will conclude with a final at New Jersey’s MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford on June 26, drawing a line under what is arguably the biggest tournament held in the United States since the 1994 World Cup.

Billed as a celebration of football across the Americas, 10 South American teams and six teams from the CONCACAF (North America, Central America and the Caribbean) region make up the field.

For organizers, the mere fact that the tournament is taking place at all is something of a triumph.

For several months last year the Copa faced an uncertain future after the arrest and indictment for corruption of several officials from South America and CONCACAF responsible for dreaming up the tournament.

– ‘World Cup of Fraud’ –
When plans for the tournament were launched at a glitzy event in Miami in 2014, CONCACAF President Jeffrey Webb stood proudly alongside South American federation (CONMEBOL) chief Eugenio Figueredo.

“The American continent may have been discovered in 1492, but I can’t imagine a better way to unite this continent than with football,” Webb said.

Yet if prosecutors have their way, both men may soon be united behind bars.

Webb and Figueredo were among several officials arrested in Switzerland in May 2015 as part of the US-led corruption investigation which ultimately led to the sensational downfall of FIFA President Sepp Blatter.

With impeccable timing, Webb is due to appear in a New York courtroom on Friday — the day of the opening match — to face sentencing for his role in the scandal.

Figueredo, 84, was extradited to Uruguay from Switzerland last December and also faces criminal prosecution.

Both Figueredo and Webb — as well as former CONMEBOL chief Nicolas Leoz — are accused of pocketing millions of dollars in bribes linked to the award of media rights for the tournament, part of a scam dubbed a “World Cup of Fraud”.

– ‘We deserve championship’ –
The sleazy background to the competition threatened to take the shine off an event which will bring together some of the world’s best players.

Messi and Argentina will be aiming to win the country’s first major title since the 1993 Copa America after a series of recent near-misses.

The Argentines lost both the 2014 World Cup final and the 2015 Copa America in Chile. Messi, due in Spain this week to attend his trial for tax fraud, says it is time Argentina’s talented players delivered.

“It has been a very long time since Argentina has won anything, and this group came very close in the World Cup and at the last Copa America,” he told Sports Illustrated on the eve of the tournament.

“I think we deserve to be champions of an important competition.”

Argentina open their campaign against Chile in Santa Clara next Monday. Panama and Bolivia complete Group D.

The United States meanwhile will aim to build on their encouraging performance at the 2014 World Cup, when they reached the knockout round, by progressing from a “Group of Death” which includes Colombia, Costa Rica and Paraguay.

Five-time World Cup winners Brazil will be favored to safely navigate Group B, where they face Ecuador, Haiti and Peru.

The Brazilians open against Ecuador at Pasadena’s Rose Bowl on Saturday — scene of their victory at the 1994 World Cup final.

Mexico and Uruguay will be expected to progress from Group C, with Jamaica and Venezuela completing the field.

Egypt says signal likely from MS804 black boxes detected

PHOTO:AFP

A signal has been detected that is likely to be from one of the black boxes of the EgyptAir plane that crashed in the Mediterranean last month, Egypt said Wednesday.

The signal was picked up by a French navy ship that is searching for the wreckage of the Airbus A320 using devices to listen for the pings of its flight recorders, the ministry of civil aviation said.

The plane went down with 66 people on board on May 19 during a flight from Paris to Cairo.

Another vessel sent by a private company hired to help find the black boxes is on its way to the area carrying robots that can dive to the seabed to recover them.

The ship is due to arrive at the site within a week, the ministry said.

“Extensive search efforts are being carried out to locate the two data recorders in preparation for their retrieval,” the ministry said.

The black boxes, which have enough battery power to emit signals for four or five weeks, could help investigators determine the reason for the crash.

Investigators have said it is too soon to determine what caused the disaster although a terror attack has not been ruled out.

France’s aviation safety agency has said the aircraft transmitted automated messages indicating smoke in the cabin and a fault in the flight control unit minutes before disappearing from radar screens.

Professional boxers can compete at Rio Olympics

Tyson Fury and other professional boxers could be set to become eligible to compete in the Olympics PHOTO: Getty Images/AFP

Professional boxers can compete at the upcoming Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, the sport’s governing body ruled in a landmark decision on Wednesday.

Meeting at an extraordinary congress in Lausanne, Switzerland, 88 members of the International Boxing Association (AIBA) voted in favour of the move, while none voted against and four abstained.

The final results of the vote were told to AFP by a senior official within AIBA who requested anonymity as they were not authorised to speak publicly on the subject before the official announcement.

The revolutionary decision is however unlikely to see boxing’s biggest names enter the Olympic ring in Rio.

For most professionals, like former heavyweight champion Wladimir Klitschko, it is already too late to take part in a qualifying contest. The last tournament is in Venezuela in July.

There is a rich history of fighters making their name at the Olympics before moving on to have groundbreaking professional careers, including Muhammad Ali, who won gold at the Romes Games in 1960, when he was still known by his birth name, Cassius Clay.

But letting those who have already turned professional fight at the Games has faced some resistance, including from former gold medallist and world heavyweight title holder Lennox Lewis, who said it would be “preposterous” to let professionals into the same ring as amateurs.

AIBA president Wu Ching-Kuo has aggressively supported the move, arguing that the distinction between amateurs and professionals had become increasingly arbitrary.

He also argued that letting the sport’s best athletes compete at such a showcase event would raise boxing’s profile.

The admission of professional basketball to the Olympics in time for the 1992 Games in Barcelona has helped make men’s basketball one of the most hotly-anticipated events of the Games.

But AIBA will have to answer questions about its dope testing policy in order to satisfy the International Olympic Committee, which is embroiled in a series of doping scandals and is battling to keep drug cheats out of the Rio Games.

A World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) report found that the AIBA has not carried out any out-of-competition tests in the year ahead of Rio and hardly any in the past three years, the British magazine Private Eye reported.

The report was quoted as saying that the AIBA’s actions fell “considerably short” of WADA’s requirements.

WADA spokesman Ben Nichols would not comment directly on the substance of the Private Eye report but confirmed that the agency’s inspection team had given AIBA recommendations aimed at “improving and enhancing” its anti-doping program.

AIBA had started working on the implementation of the recommendations, the WADA spokesman added.

Boxing has undergone major changes in recent years. Women were allowed into Olympic competition in 2012 and headguards will no longer be compulsory from Rio.

Teenager dies while undergoing illegal female circumcision in Egypt

A 17-year-old Egyptian teenage girl, Mayar Mohammad, died due to severe bleeding and a drop in blood circulation after she was subjected to an illegal female genital mutilation (FGM) surgery in a private hospital in Suez, Egypt. According to local media reports, the girl’s mother is a nurse, while their late father was a surgeon. So you'd expect the mother to know not to let her daughter go through such backward torture, all in the name of tradition.

FGM has been banned in Egypt since 2007, but the brutal practice is still being practiced illegally in the country and especially in rural areas. In February, the United Nations Children Fund (Unicef) said in its annual report on FGM that Egypt witnessed a significant decline of FGM prevalence but still 48% of girls underwent FGM in 2014 compared with 78% in 2008.

The death of Mayar was the first reported in three years and authorities immediately ordered the closure of the private hospital. Egypt’s governmental National Council for Women condemned the unlawful surgery and said in a statement that “performers of such criminal operations must face strict penalties.”

Abdul Abdelaty, a human rights lawyer during an interview with the Middle East Eye website said that even though the operation is illegal, it is really cheap. “Doctors ask between $1 and $15 to do it (FGM) because there is a high demand and a constant flow of cash. The economic aspect – it is really important, and it can be stopped only by enforcing the law,” the lawyer said.

According to Gulf News website, friends of the 17-year-old victim blamed her mother for subjecting her own daughter to FGM.
The teenager's classmate, Rawan Al Jamal said in a Facebook post:

“Mayar died due to ignorance and backwardness of her mother, who regarded her daughter as guilty only because she was created a female,”

Lionel Messi's tax fraud trial kicks off in Spain, football star to appear on Thursday

Football star Lionel Messi's tax fraud trial began yesterday in Spain and the trial is expected to last till Thursday when the football star will appear in court.

Messi and his father Jorge Messi, who manages his financial affairs, are accused of defrauding the Spanish government of more than €4m (£3m; $4.5m) between 2007 and 2009.

The Police authorities allege that the two used tax havens in Belize and Uruguay to conceal earnings from image rights.
According to Messi's lawyers, the footballer isn't aware of anything that happens with his finances and should be cleared of any wrongdoing, but the tax authorities who want large fines and a prison sentence for the footballer say that Messi can't claim ignorance with regards to his financial affairs as his father, Jorge, heads his management team.

Yen surges on Brexit fears, Tokyo delay on sales tax hike

PHOTO / YOSHIKAZU TSUNO / AFP

The yen surged Wednesday as market sentiment soured on growing fears that Britain may leave the European Union and news that Japan is delaying a sales tax hike that threatens the fragile economy.

The Japanese unit — seen as a safe bet in times of uncertainty — jumped in Asia after polls overnight showed British voters more in favour of quitting the 28-member bloc.

The results come just weeks before a referendum on the so-called Brexit, which critics warn could deal a major blow to Britain’s economy and also hit global economic growth.

“Brexit is rearing its head for investors after the latest poll numbers, which is leading to risk-off and yen-buying,” Chihiro Ohta, senior strategist at SMBC Nikko Securities, told Bloomberg News.

But Ayako Sera, a market strategist at Sumitomo Trust Bank, said she did not really have an explanation for the yen’s rapid appreciation in afternoon trading apart from a speculative move triggered by investors unwinding long-term positions.

“Brexit is a big uncertainty, but euro-dollar is stagnant now,” Sera told AFP.

“If Brexit is the reason for the yen’s appreciation, the euro would also rapidly depreciate, but the euro didn’t move.”

In afternoon Tokyo trading, the dollar dived to 109.77 yen from 110.73 yen in New York, while the euro plunged to 122.07 yen from 123.26 yen.

The yen also jumped two percent on the British pound, which was changing hands at $1.4487, slightly up from late US trading where it had slid one percent on news of the polls.

Analysts said the yen’s rise was also stoked by traders reacting to news reports that Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe will delay a contentious sales tax rise planned for next year to avoid damaging the country’s weak economy.

Tokyo was scheduled to raise the sales tax from eight percent to 10 percent in April 2017 to help pay down Japan’s massive national debt, but Abe has reportedly decided to push it back by more than two years to late 2019 — when he is likely no longer in office.

In other trading, the euro edged down to $1.1124 from $1.1131 in US trade, while the Australian dollar jumped after the Australia’s economy grew more than expected in the first quarter, lifting expectations that interest rates will remain steady.

The Aussie dollar advanced 0.6 percent to 72.76 US cents in afternoon trade as Australia’s statistics bureau said economic growth expanded by 1.1 percent in the first quarter, or a brisk 3.1 percent annualised rate.

Microsoft wants Windows to open into mixed reality

Microsoft is out to use Windows software to do for altered reality what it did for personal computers: make them commonplace.

The US technology giant on Wednesday announced that Windows software already powering a wide range of devices including HoloLens augmented reality headgear is being opened to partners interested in building devices for “mixed reality” experiences.

Devices built on the Windows platform will be interoperable, meaning that someone wearing HTC Vive virtual reality gear would be able to virtually visit and collaborate with someone using HoloLens virtual reality goggles, Microsoft executives told AFP.

The list of partners already working with Microsoft included HTC, Lenovo, Asus, and HP.

Microsoft said it built HoloLens to showcase the potential for the technology, which is based on the same Windows operating system that powers computers, smartphones, Xbox consoles and more.

Sharing the Windows platform will mean that augmented or virtual reality gear from various manufacturers will be able to work with one another, the same way Windows computers do.

“We are bringing the software that lights up HoloLens to the entire ecosystem of mixed reality devices –- and inviting partners to join us in this platform,” Microsoft spokesman Greg Sullivan told AFP.

While virtual reality devices such as those from Facebook-owned Oculus and Sony’s PlayStation unit immerse users in fantasy worlds, HoloLens “augments” reality by overlaying holograms on the real world in view.

HoloLens lets users interact with virtual objects using hand gestures.

Microsoft would not disclose details regarding how it will make money from the move. But it is expected to pursue the kinds of licensing deals it negotiates with companies that make Windows-powered computers.

Creating a common platform for a wide range of companies to create and market mixed reality gear promises to bring down prices for altered reality gear while enriching variety in the marketplace.

Microsoft in March began its first shipments of its HoloLens to application developers, staking its place in what is expected to be an emerging computing platform.

At a recent Microsoft Build developers’ conference, the company showed some of the possibilities for HoloLens — such as giving users a view of Mars that up to now could only be seen by space vehicles, and an inside view of the brain by medical specialists aiming to deal with a cerebral tumor.

Aiming to encourage new applications for the device, Microsoft noted that developers can create “new mixed reality” with holograms to enable users to see and experience things in new ways.

The holographic capabilities in the Microsoft gear can open doors for developers to augment tasks from complex surgery to motorcycle design, according to the company.

Marketers predict virtual headsets will soon top wish lists for kids and young adults from Silicon Valley to Hong Kong. But some analysts say virtual reality will be eclipsed by augmented reality within a few years.

Elephants in Tanzania reserve could be wiped out by 2022

Tanzania has been identified as the leading exporter of illegal ivory in recent years. An estimated 10,000 elephants are being slaughtered in the country annually. Here, elephants walk in the Serengeti National Reserve in northern Tanzania in 2010.

Elephants in Tanzania’s sprawling Selous Game Reserve could be wiped out within six years if poaching continues at current levels, the World Wildlife Fund warned Wednesday.

Tanzania’s largest nature reserve was in the 1970s home to 110,000 elephants, but today only 15,000 remain and they are threatened by “industrial-scale poaching”.

The Selous “could see its elephant population decimated by 2022 if urgent measures are not taken,” the WWF said.

More than 30,000 African elephants are killed by poachers every year to supply an illegal trade controlled by criminal gangs that feeds demand in the Far East.

Tanzania is among the worst-affected countries with a recent census saying the country’s elephant population fell by 60 percent in the five years to 2014.

The Selous reserve is a tourist draw contributing an estimated $6 million (5 million euros) a year to Tanzania’s economy, according to a study commissioned by WWF and carried out by advisory firm Dalberg.

It is named after Frederick Selous, a British explorer, hunter and real-life inspiration for the H. Rider Haggard character Allan Quatermain in King Solomon’s Mines.

“By early 2022 we could see the last of Selous’ elephants gunned down by heavily armed and well trained criminal networks,” the report said.

The 55,000-square kilometre (21,000-square mile) reserve in southern Tanzania was named a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1982.

But it was put on a watch list in 2014 as poaching spiked, with six elephants killed every day and industrial activities including oil and gas exploration, as well as mining, threatening the delicate environment.

WWF Tanzania country director Amani Ngusaru said the Selous’ value, “is dependent on its large wildlife populations and pristine ecosystems.”

“Achieving zero elephant poaching is the first step to setting Selous on a path toward fulfilling its sustainable development potential,” Ngusaru said.
