Police arraign man over murder of an MTN staff

Kwara Police Command has arraigned one Ogundele David, aged 35 years, for an alleged murder of a member of a staff of MTN, Tosin Ashinwo, before an Ilorin Magistrate Court.

David said to be, a teacher at Landmark University Secondary School, Omu-Aran, was charged with culpable homicide punishable with Ddeath and attempt to commit culpable homicide contrary to sections 221 and 229 of Penal Code Law.

The matter was transferred from ‘F’ Division Police Station, Ilorin to the State Criminal Intelligence and Investigation Department for discreet investigation.

The First Information Report (FIR) said the suspect was at Tosin’s residence at Tanke where he met her mother, Abiola Ashinwo and made effort to convince his girlfriend and mum on a marriage proposal, a plea refused on the basis that David is a married man.

According to the FIR, the refusal of marriage proposal infuriated the suspect; hence, he ran into the kitchen, picked a knife and stabbed Tosin to death on the spot.

The suspect also stabbed Tosin’s mother ‘all over her body to the state of coma,’ the Police further alleged.
The victims’ mother was receiving medical treatment at the University of Ilorin Teaching Hospital (UITH), but her survival is not certain, the Police expressed.

The Police explained that the accused after he committed the alleged offence was said to have been on the run, but he was arrested by security operatives at Oba-Ile, his hometown in Osun State.

“Police investigation revealed that you Ogundele David callously and heartlessly stabbed the said Tosin Ashinwo, 30 years, and from there descended on her mother, Abiola Ashinwo, 65 years. The said Abiola Ashinwo is still receiving treatment at the UITH Ilorin and her state of survival is not certain,” the FIR said.

The suspect pleaded not guilty to the charge when arraigned before the court.

In his submission, Police Prosecutor, Oderinde Abideen told the court that investigation on the matter has not been concluded and prayed the court to grant them another day for the trial.

He, therefore, opposed to the bail of the accused, saying the offences allegedly committed are capital in nature and they are not ordinarily bailable.

Abideen further argued that the suspect if admitted to bail would likely jump it and thereby tamper with an ongoing investigation of the police.

In his ruling, Magistrate Mercy Adebola refused the accused bail and ordered his remand at the Federal Prison Custody Madalla. The case was, however, adjourned till June 6, 2016, for further mention.
